How the service works
The www.linkmyfamilytree.com website is a unique service which allows you to
search for your ancestors in a massive database (currently 6 million ancestors
but growing daily) and to share information which you already know about your
ancestors with other members.
In effect it is a global family tree that can be used to link and extend what
you know about your own family tree with information provided by other members
all over the world.
The basic member service as described above is absolutely free although there is
an option to take out a full membership, at a small cost (£7.99 per annum in
the UK). The full membership will allow you to email other descendants and will
include additional facilities, providing even more information about your
ancestors.
Emailing other descendants will enable you to further your research and contact
lost relatives. To take out a full membership now please click
here. When using the website you need to
know a couple of key concepts: -
|
An ancestor is defined as a person who was born before 1931.
A large number of ancestors have been pre-loaded into the database by
www.linkmyfamilytree.com and come from various sources such as existing
genealogy research and census details.
However the members themselves will have entered most ancestors. We encourage
members to search for all ancestors that they know about and to associate
themselves as descendants or to enter details of ancestors that they cannot
find.
When a member associates himself or herself with an ancestor (e.g. to say this
is my great-grandfather) all other descendant members of that ancestor will be
informed by email. This will enable members to further their knowledge of their
family tree and to contact lost relatives if they wish to.
|
A descendant is a member of www.linkmyfamilytree.com who has associated
themselves with one or more ancestors i.e. when you use the website you can
record your relationship to any number of ancestors.
Facilities are provided to enable you to view all the descendants associated
with an ancestor and to view all the ancestors of a descendant – in this way
you can follow the links to trace your family tree.
As time goes by and our membership increases more and more links will be
established allowing you to extend your family tree further into the past and
outwards to your current day relatives if you wish.
